Călin Georgescu faces court hearing over preventive arrest extension

Former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu is scheduled to appear before the Bucharest Tribunal on Monday, October 26, to address a request from DIICOT to extend his preventive arrest for an additional 30 days. This follows a decision by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to overturn a previous ruling that had replaced his detention with house arrest.

Georgescu is primarily accused of defrauding businessman Răzvan Leu of 1.1 million euros. Prosecutors allege that Georgescu, alongside Ionel Rusen and Massimiliano Arena, orchestrated a scheme involving a promised 6-million-euro credit line for precious metal transactions. Of the total amount, 100,000 euros was allegedly intended to fund Georgescu's presidential campaign.

In addition to the fraud charges, Georgescu faces separate criminal investigations. DIICOT has accused him of requesting a man to scan his villa in Mogoșoaia to detect potential surveillance devices installed by investigators.
