Brasília's Modern Architecture and Expat Lifestyle Highlights
Brasília, Brazil’s federal capital, was built in just 41 months and inaugurated in 1960. Designed by urban planner Lúcio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer, the city’s layout resembles an airplane, separating governmental, residential, and commercial zones. Its modernist landmarks such as the Congress, the Cathedral and the Palácio da Alvorada are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Foreign residents praise the city’s cultural scene and outdoor spaces. Colombian designer Oscar Soler enjoys local bars and live music venues like Samba da Tia Zélia. French expatriate Marie Perhirin frequents Lago Paranoá for rowing and swimming, practices yoga at the Indian embassy, and shops at the Feira da Torre de TV. Ecuadorian Ariana Díaz highlights the safety, green quadrants and weekend gatherings in the Asa Norte area.
