Brazil advances electronic toll collection on major highways

Electronic toll systems that allow vehicles to pass without stopping are being promoted across Brazil. The Sem Parar service uses transponder tags to automatically debit toll fees, reducing queue times, improving safety, cutting emissions and offering drivers detailed expense tracking. Major providers such as ConectCar, Sem Parar and TAG supply the devices after online registration and vehicle verification.

In São Paulo, the state’s transport agency (Artesp) is testing the Siga Fácil electronic gantry system on the Anchieta‑Imigrantes corridor. The pilot, managed by Ecovias, has installed gantries that read license plates and electronic tags, with toll collection suspended during validation. Officials say the trials will assess accuracy, safety and operational reliability before full rollout, potentially extending the technology to other state roads.
