Brazil advances rights for LGBTQIA+ and transgender populations

In Brazil, new legislative and judicial measures are being introduced to protect the rights and dignity of LGBTQIA+ and transgender populations.

Bill 3337/26, currently under analysis in the Chamber of Deputies, proposes a national protocol for the Unified Health System (SUS). The project aims to standardize care flows, ensuring respect for gender identity, sexual orientation, and social names. For transgender individuals, the protocol would guarantee access to hormone therapy, psychological support, and multidisciplinary care while prohibiting discriminatory or humiliating practices during medical consultations and triage.

Simultaneously, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, the General Internal Affairs Office of Justice has established new rules to facilitate free civil registration and the rectification of name and gender for transgender and non-binary people. Following a request from the Public Defender's Office, the new regulations unify procedures across state notary offices, prohibiting officials from judging a person's financial status based on appearance. To prevent stigma, free documents will simply state ‘exempt from fees’ rather than labeling the individual's economic status.
