Brazil expands renewable energy through biomethane and biogas initiatives

Brazil is expanding its renewable energy infrastructure through new biomethane and biogas initiatives. In Rio Grande do Sul, a new R$ 95 million biomethane plant has been inaugurated in São Leopoldo. This facility, part of the CRVR Sustainable Valorization Unit, aims to produce 34,000 Nm³/day of fuel from organic waste, potentially meeting up to 10% of the state's gas demand.

On a broader industrial scale, the Brazilian Association of Biogas and Biomethane (ABiogás) is targeting the production of fertilizers as a new economic frontier. The industry seeks to utilize digestate—a nutrient-rich liquid byproduct of biodigestion—to reduce reliance on imported fertilizers. This strategy includes using biomethane as an input for nitrogenous fertilizers and promoting the recovery of nutrients from waste.

Additionally, research and educational efforts are supporting this transition. Embrapa is hosting discussions on how bioinputs can help agriculture adapt to climate change and environmental stresses, while regional events in Paraná are teaching producers how to convert animal waste into clean energy and biofertilizers.
