Brazil expands sustainability, biofuels, and bioeconomy

Overview

Brazil’s agribusiness and bioeconomy sectors continue to advance through technological innovation and infrastructure expansion. In the bio-input market, the adoption of biological solutions is growing at an annual rate exceeding 20%, which CropLife Brasil notes is four times the global average.

The bioenergy sector is seeing massive investment growth. ABiogás projects private investments in biogas and biomethane could reach R$ 216 billion by 2035. An international study commissioned by the MBCBrasil Institute identifies Brazil as one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for biomethane, alongside the United States, China, India, and Spain. While markets in Sweden and Germany are more consolidated, Brazil shows significant potential to lead in integrated engineering and technological solutions for decarbonization. In the private sector, companies like Binatural are already integrating pure biodiesel (B100) into logistics to reduce CO2 emissions.

To address technological gaps, a Faperj-funded project is utilizing artificial intelligence to optimize landfill biogas production. Expanding biofuel application, the Economic Affairs Commission (CAE) has approved Bill 1.402/2026, providing tax incentives for maritime vessels designed for biodiesel or ethanol.

In agribusiness financing, the sector is addressing socio-environmental risks by using the Forest Code and the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) to condition public rural credit on environmental compliance. Simultaneously, the sector is exploring asset tokenization to modernize capital access. Agrotools CEO Sergio Rocha suggests that tokenizing the productive and environmental characteristics of rural properties—including crops, timber, livestock, and carbon credit potential—could transform land into digital assets more easily understood by capital markets.
