Brazil agribusiness explores rural credit safeguards and asset tokenization

The Brazilian agribusiness sector is exploring new methods to manage financing and leverage rural assets. Public rural credit plays a strategic role in funding production and environmental recovery, but it carries socio-environmental risks in areas flagged for deforestation or land conflicts. To mitigate these risks, regulatory frameworks such as the Forest Code and the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) are used to condition credit on environmental compliance.

Simultaneously, technological advancements like asset tokenization are being positioned as a way to modernize the sector. Agrotools CEO Sergio Rocha suggests that tokenizing productive and environmental characteristics of rural properties could transform land and its outputs—such as crops, timber, and livestock—into digital assets more easily understood by capital markets. This process could also monetize environmental assets, including water resources, native vegetation, and carbon credit potential, providing new avenues for capital to meet the sector's needs.
