Brazil implements updates to artisanal fishing benefits and innovation funding
The Ministry of Fishing and Aquaculture (MPA) has announced significant updates regarding the 'Seguro-Defeso' benefit for artisanal fishers. The management of these payments has transitioned from the National Social Security Institute (INSS) to the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) to optimize service flow. Additionally, a new application window has been established, allowing professionals to request aid from 30 days before to 90 days after the start of the fishing moratorium.
In a separate initiative to modernize the sector, the MPA is participating in a public selection process facilitated by Finep, which allocates R$ 120 million for technological innovation in family farming and artisanal fishing. This funding aims to develop more efficient vessels, low-consumption refrigeration systems, and improved thermal packaging to reduce operational costs and enhance fish preservation.
Furthermore, aquaculture professionals in Caraguatatuba have been advised to regularize their General Registry of Fishing Activity (RGP) by December 31 to ensure legal security and valid licensing under new ministry regulations.
