Brazil allocates R$337 million to fight deforestation and forest fires

A provisional measure published on 15 June 2026 authorises the Brazilian government to allocate R$337.5 million for actions against deforestation, forest‑fire prevention and environmental enforcement. Of the total, R$194.4 million is earmarked for the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), with roughly R$149.3 million directed to fire‑prevention and control in priority federal areas and R$45.1 million for expanded inspection activities nationwide.

The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) will receive R$143.1 million to strengthen monitoring and firefighting in conservation units, including equipment purchases and operational support. The funding aims to increase protected‑area coverage by more than 148,000 km² and to carry out 167 new enforcement actions. The measure complies with a Supreme Court directive and remains in force for 120 days pending congressional approval.
