Brazil and UK partner on Amazon ornamental fish sustainability

The Brazilian Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) and the UK’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) completed a technical mission in the Amazon to promote the sustainable development of the ornamental aquatic organism chain.

Conducted between October 5 and 9, 2026, the mission included visits to Manaus and Barcelos. The delegation engaged with researchers from the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) and local artisanal fishermen on the Middle Negro River to integrate scientific research with empirical field knowledge.

The collaboration aims to improve fisheries management, support public policy, and strengthen the sustainable use of natural resources. Experts noted that the exchange of knowledge between Brazilian and British specialists is vital for mapping local production specificities and improving the economic impact of the ornamental fish sector in the region.
