The Brazilian government has announced a major investment of approximately 2.3 billion reais in artificial intelligence as part of the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan (PBIA). This initiative aims to expand national computational capacity and reduce dependence on foreign infrastructure.

A central component of the plan is the acquisition of a supercomputer for Rio Grande do Norte, estimated to cost 1 billion reais. This machine, to be located at the Augusto Severo Science and Technology Park in Macaíba, is expected to reach a capacity of 7,200 petaflops and rank among the ten most powerful AI supercomputers globally. The National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC) will lead the technical implementation.

An additional 1.3 billion reais will be directed toward supercomputing infrastructure in Rio de Janeiro, involving partnerships with Chinese companies Huawei and iFlytek. The project seeks to foster technology transfer, professional training, and the development of language models in Portuguese and Spanish. Both major infrastructure projects are scheduled to become operational in the second half of 2027.
