Brazil Approves School Eco‑Adaptation Policy and Diabetes Rights Law

The Federal District's Legislative Chamber passed Project Law 2.264/2026, establishing a Climate‑Friendly Arborisation and Ecological Adaptation policy for public schools. The measure, authored by Deputy Fábio Felix (PSOL), calls for planting native Cerrado trees, creating green spaces, rain gardens, permeable areas and rainwater‑capture systems to mitigate heat waves, drought and low humidity, aiming to improve comfort and health for students, teachers and staff.

Separately, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed Law 15.439/2026, expanding protections for people with type‑1 diabetes. The law guarantees free access to medications, monitoring equipment and insulin pumps through the SUS, mandates reasonable accommodations in schools and workplaces, prohibits discrimination, and makes medical certificates permanently valid. It also allows diabetes information to be recorded on national ID cards for emergency use, though it does not automatically classify diabetes as a disability.

Both measures illustrate Brazil's broader push to strengthen public welfare through targeted legislation.
