Brazil health challenges: diabetes, heart, vision
Entities: Instituto Datafolha · Brazilian Diabetes Society · Federal District (Brazil) · Raul Canal · ACT Promoção da Saúde
Overview
Diabetes continues to expand in Brazil, now affecting more than 16 million adults. Prevalence in the capital cities has risen from 42.6 % in 2006 to 62.6 % in 2024, and a Vigitel 2025 report shows adult prevalence has more than doubled to 12.9 %, with obesity up 118 % and overweight 47 % since 2006. Early metabolic signs—insulin resistance, post‑meal fatigue and sweet cravings—are flagged as warnings, especially for women over 40, where over 40 % exhibit insulin resistance, 65.6 % have metabolic syndrome and 17.1 % are diagnosed with diabetes. Menopause‑related estrogen decline exacerbates abdominal fat and cellular insulin sensitivity loss, while cultural pressure for extreme thinness adds physical and mental‑health risks.
Complications are deepening: a ten‑year study of 27 capitals recorded more than 45 000 diabetic‑foot cases, tripling between 2008 and 2018; peripheral neuropathy now drives roughly two‑thirds of non‑traumatic amputations. Heart failure affects about 1.7 million Brazilians, and vision loss remains the most common functional disability, with nearly 8 million reporting total blindness or severe visual difficulty.
The latest Federal District survey (Vigitel 2023) finds a 12.1 % adult diabetes diagnosis rate—the highest among capital cities and equal to São Paulo—nearly two points above the national 10.2 % average. Treatment adherence in the Central‑West region is the lowest nationwide at 65.8 %, raising fears of avoidable complications. A Datafolha poll shows 92 % of Brazilian adults worry about chronic non‑communicable diseases, linking smoking, alcohol, unhealthy diets, inactivity, air pollution and climate events to higher risk, and calling for clearer product information and stronger public‑health messaging.
