Brazil authorities warn of rising real estate and housing scams

Authorities and real estate organizations in Brazil are warning citizens about various fraudulent schemes targeting housing and rentals.

In Goiânia, Secovi Goiás and local agencies have identified rental scams where criminals pose as property owners or managers. These scammers may physically visit properties, remove real estate agency signage, or even hire locksmiths to gain access to homes. They build credibility by showing the property in person and using fake contracts for digital signatures, eventually tricking victims into transferring rental payments to fraudulent accounts.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, specifically in Chapadão do Sul, criminals are impersonating officials from the Popular Housing Agency (AGEHAB/MS). These scammers contact individuals claiming they have been selected for housing programs, demanding fees or payments to secure the units. They often send fraudulent contracts via mobile devices to appear legitimate. AGEHAB/MS has clarified that it does not charge fees for the selection or concession of housing units and that official communications follow strict established procedures involving Caixa Econômica Federal.
