Fraudulent schemes in Brazil
Overview
Brazil is experiencing a rise in diverse fraudulent schemes targeting citizens through online platforms. Initially, criminals utilized sophisticated tactics for real estate rental scams, employing cloned advertisements, professional-looking contracts, and fake websites to defraud victims via instant Pix payments.
These rental scams have become increasingly elaborate. In some instances, scammers facilitate in-person property visits to build trust, even going as far as removing real estate signage or hiring locksmiths to gain access to homes. Recent reports highlight cases where victims lost significant sums after being presented with fake lease agreements. Additionally, criminals are impersonating officials from housing agencies, such as AGEHAB/MS, to demand fraudulent fees for supposedly secured housing units.
More recent fraudulent activities have expanded to include identity theft and impersonation of government and health institutions. Scammers are using artificial intelligence to create fake ads on social media platforms, falsely promoting debt renegotiation programs under non-existent initiatives like “Libera Brasil”. A study identified hundreds of such ads, noting that 38% were created using AI. Furthermore, fraudulent job recruitment schemes have emerged, where criminals impersonate health management institutes, such as IgesDF and HBDF, to solicit fees for fake training courses and selection processes.
