Brazil beef futures hit record high as supply tightens

During July 2024 Brazil's cattle market showed firming prices for the arroba as the lean season limited the number of finished cattle available for slaughter. Nine major producing states, including São Paulo, Bahia, Goiás, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul, recorded price gains, with the arroba rising by up to R$5 in São Paulo to around R$335. Consultancy firms Agrifatto and Scot noted that the restricted supply was the main factor preventing further declines despite modest domestic demand and a temporary suspension of some shipments to China.

Futures contracts on the B3 also rallied. The October 2026 contract reached a new peak of R$360 per arroba on July 16, marking its highest level since the start of the year. Other contracts for 2026 and early 2027 rose as well, while the physical market indicator Datagro stayed above R$330 per arroba. The sector recorded a historic level of cow and heifer slaughter in the first quarter of 2026, reinforcing concerns about future beef production but also supporting current price strength.

Overall, limited supply amid a waiting‑for‑demand environment kept the boi gordo market more balanced, with producers retaining cattle and buyers proceeding cautiously.
