Brazil beef industry faces productivity and regulatory challenges

Brazil has established itself as a global leader in the beef market, producing 12.3 million tons in 2025 and exporting 3.5 million tons to 177 countries. Over the last 30 years, productivity has increased by 183% while pasture area decreased by 18%, according to IBGE data.

Despite this growth, the sector faces significant challenges. There is a massive productivity gap between regions, such as São Paulo and Amapá. Additionally, international markets are imposing stricter environmental and health standards. To comply with European Union regulations regarding deforestation, Brazil is implementing the National Bovine Identification Plan (PNIB), aiming for 100% herd identification by 2032. The industry also faces pressure to implement antimicrobial-free protocols to maintain EU market access.

Regarding livestock management, experts from Embrapa emphasize that there is no universal best cattle breed for meat production. The ideal breed depends on specific regional climates, management systems, and economic goals. Success relies on technical analysis of the productive environment and continuous genetic improvement rather than generic breed labels.
