Brazil betting platforms’ design fuels addiction, urges legislative overhaul

Researchers warn that the architecture of online betting platforms in Brazil exploits cognitive biases to create compulsive gambling behavior. Flávio Ataliba Flexa Barreto of FGV Ibre explained that the platforms’ internal design—such as rapid transaction speeds, variable‑size rewards, timed notifications and instant Pix deposits—“prende” and “vicia” millions of users, making it hard for them to stop.
