Brazil online betting ban: deadline for fund withdrawals ends Monday

The deadline for users to voluntarily withdraw funds from online betting platforms in Brazil ends at 23:59 on Monday, October 5. This follows the implementation of Provisional Measure 1,394, signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which prohibits the operation, advertising, and intermediation of online betting and virtual games.

Starting at 0:00 on Tuesday, October 6, internet providers, app stores, and the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) will block access to betting websites and applications. Users attempting to access these sites will be redirected to a page providing instructions on fund recovery.

For those who do not withdraw their balances by the deadline, a mandatory refund process will occur. Between October 7 and 8, betting companies must report remaining balances, linked to individual CPFs, to participating banks. Banks are then scheduled to return the funds to users between October 9 and October 14. If any issues arise during this period, Caixa Econômica Federal will step in to mediate the returns starting October 14.

Additionally, all betting-related advertising and marketing, including sports sponsorships, must be removed by the end of Monday. The measure aims to combat household indebtedness, following a significant reduction in daily transaction volumes, which previously averaged R$ 600 million per day.
