Brazil betting platforms owe R$ 159 million to bettors
Approximately R$ 159 million remains to be returned to online bettors in Brazil following the cessation of certain platform operations. While over R$ 1 billion has already been refunded, current data indicates that 22.5 million bettors, holding balances across 70.5 million accounts, are still owed funds. The majority of these remaining balances are very small: 90% of accounts hold less than R$ 1, and 97% hold less than R$ 10.
Banks are scheduled to complete these transfers between October 9 and October 14. If banks are unable to process the payments, the funds will be transferred to Caixa Econômica Federal, which will then manage the restitution.
However, eight companies have failed to provide the necessary data—including CPF identification and bank details—to financial institutions. Consequently, the Advocacia-Geral da União (AGU) intends to take legal action to compel these platforms to release the information.
In a separate effort to combat illegal gambling, the government reported that between September 25 and October 9, 16,627 illegal betting sites were sent for blocking, alongside thousands of social media profiles and groups.
