Brazil banks face deadline to refund R$ 1.3 billion to bettors

Banks in Brazil have until October 14 to complete the refund of approximately R$ 1.325 billion to roughly 26.5 million bettors following the government-mandated shutdown of various online betting platforms. While over R$ 1 billion has already been returned, a remaining balance of R$ 159 million is still pending transfer.

Eight betting companies have reportedly failed to provide the necessary data to financial institutions to facilitate these refunds, prompting the Attorney General's Office to seek judicial intervention. If banks encounter operational difficulties in completing the transfers, Caixa Econômica Federal will take over the distribution of the remaining funds.

In a related crackdown, the government reported blocking 16,627 illegal betting websites between September 25 and October 9. Additionally, authorities are investigating approximately 40 individuals for potential money laundering linked to these accounts. The Ministry of Finance has advised users to monitor their original deposit accounts for automatic credits and to remain vigilant against scams requesting fees or passwords to release funds.
