Brazil bicycle market shifts toward electric bikes and new regulations

The Brazilian bicycle market is undergoing significant structural changes characterized by the rise of electric bikes and the entry of high-quality, budget-friendly road bikes from China. Industry discussions at Shimano Fest highlighted a fragmented market where brands are adjusting internal structures to remain competitive in retail.

Retailers are facing challenges including tight cash flow and high delinquency rates among suppliers. To survive, bike shops are being encouraged to evolve beyond simple sales by integrating workshops, accessories, and community-building experiences to foster customer loyalty.

In Primavera do Leste, local authorities have unanimously approved a bill to regulate the circulation of electric bicycles, mopeds, and other self-propelled micromobility devices. The regulation aims to organize the use of public spaces—including bike lanes, sidewalks, and parks—while prioritizing pedestrian safety and reducing traffic accidents. The municipal rules will align with existing federal legislation.
