Brazil cancer projections highlight need for prevention and innovation

Brazil is projected to record approximately 781,000 new cancer cases annually between 2026 and 2028, according to estimates from the National Cancer Institute (INCA). Within this scope, gynecological cancers present a significant challenge; estimates for the 2026–2028 period include 19,310 new cases of cervical cancer, 9,650 of endometrial cancer, and 8,020 of ovarian cancer.

Prevention efforts for cervical cancer focus on the HPV vaccine, which is available for free through the Unified Health System (SUS) for children aged 9 to 14. Experts emphasize that vaccination must be paired with regular screening to identify cellular changes before they progress to cancer. Warning signs include abnormal vaginal bleeding, persistent discharge, or pelvic pain.

Recent discussions in São Paulo have highlighted the need for a multifaceted approach to oncology, addressing social and environmental factors alongside medical treatment. Emerging technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence in exam analysis, blood-based tumor markers, and immunotherapy research, are identified as key areas for transforming cancer care and improving patient outcomes.
