Brazil Chamber of Deputies advances bill expanding firearm permits

The Public Security Commission of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill that expands the list of professional categories authorized to carry firearms. The proposal seeks to amend the Disarmament Statute to include various public servants, such as traffic agents, tax auditors with administrative police powers, criminal experts, judicial officers, socio-educational agents, environmental inspectors, public defenders, and members of public advocacy at federal and state levels.

Authorization is not automatic for all roles; the text establishes specific criteria based on professional activities. For instance, traffic agents would only be eligible if they work in road patrolling or inspection. The bill also stipulates that weapons must be used during service and remain under the responsibility of the respective institutions, which must maintain updated records in the National Firearms System (Sinarm).

The project, which includes a substitute presented by Deputy Capitão Alden to a bill authored by Deputy Gilvan da Federal, is still in the legislative process and must pass through further stages in Congress before becoming law.
