Coffee industry in Brazil adopts traceability and regenerative practices
New technological and sustainability initiatives are transforming the coffee sector in Brazil. The "Origem Controlada Café" platform, a collaboration between Sebrae, the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), ABDI, and CNA, now allows consumers to track the origin of specialty coffee via QR codes. This tool has already tracked over 1 million packages, providing data on producers, farm locations, varieties, and quality scores.
In parallel, Nespresso has announced advancements in its regenerative agriculture strategy in Brazil, which provides 30% of its global green coffee volume. The company is investing over R$70 million annually in the Brazilian coffee value chain. As part of its Sustainable Quality Plan, Nespresso is launching the Advanced Regenerative Prize, allocating approximately R$6 million to incentivize soil health and biodiversity. These practices have contributed to a 25% reduction in carbon emissions and increased productivity on participating farms.
