Brazil expands Maria da Penha Law to cover all gender-based violence

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) has unanimously expanded the application of the Maria da Penha Law to cover all forms of gender-based violence. Previously restricted to domestic, family, or intimate relationships, the law now protects women against gender-motivated aggression in any public or private setting, including professional and community environments.

This ruling specifically includes political gender violence, granting the Electoral Justice system the authority to issue urgent protective measures for female candidates and officials. This move aims to safeguard women's participation in political life against threats and intimidation.

In a separate legislative development, the Public Security Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill to prioritize the investigation and prosecution of sexual crimes against children and adolescents. The proposal mandates that police report suspected crimes within 24 hours and requires victims to be heard within five days to prevent re-victimization. Additionally, the bill seeks to establish strict deadlines for forensic reports and judicial proceedings to ensure faster responses to these cases.
