Brazil commission approves R$ 600 aid for caregivers of children with disabilities

The Social Security, Assistance, Childhood, Adolescence, and Family Commission of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill to establish the 'Auxílio Mãe Atípica' (Atypical Mother Aid). The proposed benefit provides R$ 600 to mothers or legal guardians of children and adolescents with severe disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), who require constant care.

Under the rapporteur's version of Bill 1520/25, the benefit is a fixed amount of R$ 600, with an additional R$ 150 for each extra dependent. To qualify, caregivers must be registered in the Federal Government's Single Registry (CadÚnico) and demonstrate that caregiving responsibilities impact their professional activities. Formal employment is not a requirement for eligibility.

In addition to financial aid, the project grants beneficiaries priority access to psychological consultations through the Unified Health System (SUS) and access to therapeutic and leisure activities. The bill must still be reviewed by the Finance and Taxation Commission, as well as the Constitution, Justice, and Citizenship Commission, before proceeding to the Chamber and Senate for final approval.
