COP30 Presidency launches energy transition and deforestation roadmaps

The Brazilian presidency of COP30 has officially released two international roadmaps designed to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and halt deforestation and forest degradation by 2030. Presented in Brasília, these documents serve as practical guides to help nations implement existing climate commitments through science-based data and national diagnostics.

The energy transition roadmap introduces the 'Preparação de Belém' (Belém Preparation), a national assessment process where countries evaluate energy supply, demand, fiscal dependence on energy markets, and investment returns. The roadmap proposes a three-phase timeline from 2028 to 2033, focusing on subsidy reforms, increasing clean energy supply, and enhancing energy efficiency.

The deforestation roadmap targets tropical, subtropical, temperate, and boreal forests, as well as mangroves and peatlands. It emphasizes strengthening territorial governance, supporting participatory monitoring, and promoting sustainable productive chains.

Both roadmaps are voluntary contributions intended to support implementation rather than serve as new binding negotiation instruments. The documents were developed with contributions from 115 countries and will be presented at COP31 in Antalya, Turkey, scheduled for November 9 to 20, 2026.
