Brazil confronts 2 million heart‑failure patients

Approximately 2 million Brazilians are living with heart failure, a chronic condition that accounts for about 240,000 new cases each year. Between 2014 and 2024 more than 2.2 million hospitalisations for the disease were recorded, with the Southeast region reporting roughly 931,000 admissions and the Northeast about 503,000.

The condition places a heavy burden on the health system and the economy, with the SESI Innovation Centre estimating a loss of around R$ 6 billion annually due to reduced productivity among affected workers. July 9 is observed as Brazil’s National Heart‑Failure Awareness Day, aimed at promoting early diagnosis and lifestyle changes.

Cardiologist Dr. Ariane Vieira Scarlatelli Macedo highlighted common myths and facts, noting that heart failure is a progressive yet manageable disease when detected early, and that symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, leg swelling, and persistent cough should prompt medical evaluation, regardless of age.
