Brazil confronts surge in online gambling addiction and family debt

Psychiatrist Cristian de Freitas Guimarães warned that debt from digital games and online betting has become the biggest financial challenge for Brazilian families, surpassing bank loan interest. He cited cases of patients who accrued huge debts, sold possessions, and missed essential payments, linking compulsive gambling to increased anxiety, depression and a 25% rate of suicide attempts among addicts. Guimarães called for public policies to prevent and treat the disorder, greater awareness, and regulation of the rapidly expanding betting sector.

In the municipality of Fernandópolis, monthly betting revenue of R$30‑50 k has driven many residents into compulsive wagering. Young adults such as 24‑year‑old Maicon Ribeiro report losing control, incurring credit‑card debt and taking loans to cover losses. Local merchants note a rise in unpaid bills, and some families have sold personal belongings. Experts stress the need for psychological help and strict financial limits to stop the cycle of addiction turning into a family tragedy.
