Brazil advances legislation to allow new professions gun permits

The Brazilian Congress is moving forward with proposals to expand the list of professionals eligible to apply for a firearm carry permit. Thirteen occupations – including lawyers, real‑estate agents, security guards, traffic agents, environmental inspectors and veterinary doctors – were cited as potentially exposed to risk in the course of their work. The House Public Safety Committee approved a bill (PL 942/26) that would let real‑estate agents request a permit, linking eligibility to active registration with the regional council. The measure still needs clearance from the Constitution and Justice Committee before heading to the Senate for further review.

If enacted, each applicant would have to meet standard legal requirements such as documentation, technical qualification, psychological evaluation and adherence to regulatory rules. The proposals do not grant automatic arm‑carrying rights but would create a new category of authorized workers.

The initiatives have not yet become law and remain subject to additional legislative steps and potential debate over public‑safety implications.
