Brazil Congress Extends Tax‑Free Imports Rule for Purchases Up to $50
The Brazilian Congress approved a 60‑day extension of Provisional Measure (MP) 1.357/2026, which eliminates the federal import tax on postal shipments to individuals valued at up to US$ 50. The extension, signed by Senate President Davi Alcolumbre and published in the Diário Oficial da União on 6 March, keeps the exemption in force until 9 September 2026, giving legislators time to vote on the measure.
Under the MP, purchases between US$ 50.01 and US$ 3,000 are subject to a simplified 30 % import‑tax rate. The measure does not affect state taxes (ICMS), which remain applicable. A related provisional measure, MP 1.358/2026, granting fuel‑subsidy incentives, was also extended for the same period. Both MPs await final approval by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate after a mixed parliamentary committee reviews them.
