Brazil credit markets grow as consumers seek alternatives to high interest rates

Brazil's credit markets are showing significant shifts as consumers seek alternatives to high-interest loans. The consortium system saw a 24.2% increase in commercialized credits between January and August 2026, totaling R$ 389.59 billion. This growth, driven by the high Selic rate of 13.75%, has led to a 15.1% rise in quota sales. Industry experts note that this expansion highlights a shortage of qualified consultants capable of providing strategic financial guidance.

Simultaneously, the real estate sector grew by 5.4% in the first half of 2026, with 226,536 new residential units sold. This resilience is attributed to a diversification of credit sources, including the FGTS and the Brazilian Savings and Loan System (SBPE). While SBPE financing grew by 12% to R$ 67.2 billion, FGTS credit saw a 22% increase. Despite high interest rates, total real estate credit reached R$ 180.9 billion, a 23% increase compared to the previous year.
