Latin America prepares for El Niño climate extremes
Governments and regional authorities across Latin America and the Caribbean are intensifying preparations for the El Niño phenomenon, which is projected to reach a critical phase between October 2026 and February 2027. The warming of Pacific sea surface temperatures is expected to cause severe weather extremes, including intense droughts, heatwaves, and heavy flooding.
In Argentina, the Federal Emergency Agency has presented the 2026-2027 Federal Coordination Plan to unify responses across provinces like Entre Ríos, Mendoza, and Santa Fe. These regions are implementing infrastructure projects such as hydraulic works, drainage improvements, and flood defenses to mitigate risks from storms and rising river levels. In Brazil, the state of Bahia is developing a comprehensive plan covering water security, agriculture, and fire prevention, while Rio Grande do Norte has seen a 51% increase in emergency decrees due to drought conditions.
In El Salvador, authorities have declared a state of maximum alert to combat drought and protect food security. Meanwhile, in the Caribbean, meteorological institutes are urging businesses and households to prepare for unseasonably dry conditions and extreme heat. Organizations like SACS Group are also advising businesses in sectors such as energy and agriculture to update contingency plans to ensure business continuity during these climate-driven disruptions.
