Brazil faces record corporate and consumer debt levels
Brazil is facing a significant surge in both corporate and consumer indebtedness. According to Serasa Experian, corporate defaults reached a historic high in June 2026, with over 9.1 million companies in arrears. The total volume of these corporate debts is estimated at R$ 232.9 billion, with an average debt of R$ 25,508.96 per company. Micro and small enterprises are particularly vulnerable, accounting for 8.6 million of the defaulted CNPJs.
On the consumer side, data from CNDL and SPC Brasil indicates that 75.08 million Brazilians were in default as of July 2026, representing 44.75% of the adult population. Credit card debt remains a primary driver, accounting for approximately 42% of consumer liabilities. High interest rates and restrictive credit conditions are cited as major factors contributing to this cycle of debt.
Simultaneously, Brazil's public debt trajectory is under scrutiny. The gross debt-to-GDP ratio reached 81.9% in June 2026, a significant increase from previous years. This fiscal pressure, combined with high interest costs, has led major financial institutions—including Banco do Brasil, Bradesco, Itaú, and Santander—to increase their provisions against doubtful debtors to R$ 91.082 billion in the first half of the year to mitigate potential losses.
