Brazil debt pressure deepens, households & firms

Entities: Brazil · João Marques · Dema Oliveira · Goshen Land · Fitch Ratings

Overview

Brazil’s credit stress remains at record levels. The average delinquency rate across the financial system held steady at 4.7 % in June 2026, the highest since the series began in 2011. Individual borrowers continued to delinquent at 5.6 %, while corporate delinquency rose to 3.2 %, a peak not seen since November 2017. Over 9 million companies (CNPJs) were classified as delinquent in May 2026, marking a 17.4 % year‑on‑year increase and pushing total corporate arrears to a record R$229.9 billion.

The government responded by extending the Desenrola Brazil 2.0 debt‑renegotiation programme until 31 August 2026. Finance Minister Dario Durigan emphasized that the extension adds no new fiscal cost and is designed to help households, drivers and small‑business owners complete negotiations covering roughly R$44.7 billion of debt already renegotiated.

These measures come as banks tighten provisions and keep loan rates above 400 % per year, while policymakers push for integrated data and analytics to improve debt‑collection practices without breaching consumer‑protection rules.
