Brazil cotton congress focuses on record production and global leadership

The 15th Brazilian Cotton Congress has commenced in Belo Horizonte, focusing on competitiveness, productivity, and global market positioning. The event brings together producers, technicians, and industry representatives to discuss strategies for upcoming seasons, including sustainability and technological advancements.

Brazil is seeing record-breaking performance in the sector. The National Supply Company (Conab) estimates a record production of 4.14 million tons of cotton lint for the 2025/26 harvest, a 1.5% increase over the previous cycle despite a 3.2% reduction in planted area. This growth is attributed to a 4.9% rise in average productivity.

On the international stage, Brazil exported a record 3.37 million tons in the last commercial year. Projections suggest Brazil will maintain its global leadership in shipments through 2026/27, with an estimated 3.33 million tons, ahead of the United States. Marcio Portocarrero, executive director of Abrapa, noted that while there is capacity for 10% annual production growth, a major challenge remains stimulating demand for natural fibers against competition from synthetic materials.
