Brazil DEAM units record surge in case closures, probe Santarém murder
In the first half of 2026, the Delegacia Especial de Atendimento à Mulher (DEAM) in Feira de Santana reported a 371.43% increase in the execution of arrest warrants and a 122% rise in the closure of investigations, according to delegate Lorena Almeida. She highlighted faster police actions, preventive detentions, and the handling of both physical and digital violence against women, noting that victims can no longer withdraw complaints once a case is opened.
In Santarém, delegate Márcia Rabelo briefed reporters on the investigation into the death of 29‑year‑old Tainá Yarina dos Santos. The suspect, lawyer Wlandre Leal, was arrested in flagrante after evidence of a knife attack was found. A custody hearing is scheduled, with forensic examinations and further witness testimony planned to move the case forward.
