Brazil debt delinquency reaches 83.9 million people

Data from Serasa indicates that 83.9 million people in Brazil were in debt as of July, representing a 0.23% increase from the previous month. The total volume of outstanding debt exceeds 348.3 million entries, totaling R$ 586.4 billion.

Despite high debt levels, a survey conducted by Serasa and the Opinion Box Institute shows a trend toward financial reorganization. Approximately 49% of respondents intend to settle their debts by December, and 69% aim to increase their savings. Debt renegotiations through the Serasa Limpa Nome ecosystem rose by 41% between May and July compared to the previous year, with over 7 million consumers reaching approximately 14 million agreements.

The high rate of delinquency, affecting nearly half of the adult population, is also linked to significant mental health challenges. Financial pressure and the inability to meet commitments are reported to cause chronic stress, anxiety, insomnia, and depression, often leading to social isolation and feelings of shame.
