Brazil digital finance: Pix dominance and new fraud protections

Brazil is experiencing a rapid digital transformation in its financial sector, characterized by the dominance of the Pix payment system and growing interest in digital wallets. According to Central Bank data, Pix accounted for 47% of non-cash transactions in the final quarter of 2024.

To address the risks associated with this speed, the Central Bank has implemented new protections. As of September 1, 2026, the deadline for recipients to contest fraudulent returns through the Special Return Mechanism (MED) has been extended from 30 to 80 days. This change aims to protect merchants and service providers from bad-faith buyers who attempt to reclaim legitimate payments.

Regional trends show a decentralization of digital finance interest. While São Paulo and the Federal District lead in digital wallet searches, Mato Grosso has emerged as a national standout, ranking fourth in the country for interest in these tools between July 2025 and June 2026. Experts at CONAREC 2026 noted that while technology increases convenience, the speed of transactions creates a paradox by reducing the time consumers have to detect fraud.
