Brazil digital scams cost R$10.1 billion in 2024, report says
The Federação Nacional de Associações dos Servidores do Banco Central (Fenasbac) and the Global Anti‑Scam Alliance (GASA) released the report "The Brazil Blueprint" on digital fraud. It documents that banking‑system losses from digital scams reached R$10.1 billion in 2024, a 17 % rise from the previous year.
The study finds that eight in ten Brazilian adults faced at least one scam attempt in the past year, and 38 % of those surveyed lost money, compared with a global average of 23 %. Between July 2024 and June 2025, more than 24 million people were victims of Pix and boleto scams, with estimated losses close to R$29 billion. Pix‑related fraud losses grew 43 % year‑on‑year to R$2.7 billion.
The report describes modern scams as an industrialised operation that uses traffic acquisition, data purchases and AI‑driven social engineering across multiple layers. In response, Brazil’s Central Bank is tightening requirements for financial institutions to issue alerts on suspicious transactions and to expand risk‑analysis mechanisms.
