Brazil digital fraud surge
Entities: Rodrigo Henriques · Central Bank of Brazil · FEBRABAN · Global Anti‑Scam Alliance (GASA) · Banco Central do Brasil
Overview
In late July 2026 Brazil’s cyber‑crime agency highlighted a rapid expansion of digital fraud, noting more than 2.26 million cases recorded in 2025 and calling for a coordinated national structure to oversee the digital environment. The agency warned that pandemic‑driven growth of online infrastructure had outpaced law‑enforcement capacity, giving criminals an advantage.
A week later, a joint report from the Central Bank’s staff association and the Global Anti‑Scam Alliance quantified the financial impact, showing banking‑system losses of R$10.1 billion in 2024—a 17 % rise year‑on‑year—and a broader estimate of almost R$29 billion in losses from Pix and boleto scams between July 2024 and June 2025. The study described the scams as industrialised operations using AI‑driven social engineering.
The report released on 31 July 2026 added further detail: eight in ten Brazilian adults reported at least one scam attempt in the past year, and 38 % of those surveyed lost money, compared with a global average of 23 %. More than 24 million people were victims of Pix and boleto scams during the July 2024‑June 2025 period, with Pix‑related fraud losses rising 43 % year‑on‑year to R$2.7 billion. In response, Brazil’s Central Bank reiterated its plan to tighten requirements for financial institutions to issue alerts on suspicious transactions and to expand risk‑analysis mechanisms, reinforcing the call for an integrated defence ecosystem.
