Brazil: Diplomat warns of US subservience and discusses energy transition

Celso Amorim, special advisor to the Presidency of Brazil, has warned that a potential political victory by Flávio Bolsonaro could lead to an unprecedented level of subservience to the United States. Amorim, a veteran diplomat, expressed concerns that such an alignment might allow direct Washington interference in Brazil’s strategic decisions, specifically regarding national sovereignty, artificial intelligence, and mineral resources.

In a separate discussion regarding Brazil’s economic and energy landscape, the importance of Petrobras was highlighted. While the global necessity for an energy transition toward renewables is acknowledged, the current global economy remains deeply dependent on petroleum. It is suggested that Brazil must continue to develop its oil production, including in the Equatorial Margin and Pelotas Basin, to secure resources necessary for its development and to fund its eventual transition to renewable energy sources.
