Brazil-United States diplomatic relations

Overview

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and the United States have faced scrutiny regarding national sovereignty and administrative reciprocity. Celso Amorim, special advisor to the Presidency of Brazil, warned that certain political shifts could lead to an “unprecedented level of subservience to the United States,” potentially allowing Washington to interfere in Brazilian strategic decisions concerning mineral resources and artificial intelligence.

Further tensions have emerged regarding ambassadorial appointments and visa reciprocity. Following a period where Brazil had no resident U.S. Ambassador, the Brazilian government is considering granting agrément to Daniel Perez, a nominee appointed by Donald Trump. This process has been complicated by the United States restricting the multiple-entry visa of the Brazilian Ambassador to Washington, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti. While Brazil denies that the approval of Perez is strictly conditional on restoring Viotti’s visa status, officials suggest the specific diplomatic visa granted to Perez may be tied to the treatment of the Brazilian ambassador.
