Brazil: Early Salary Advances and Payroll Practices Highlighted

In Brazil, workers can receive part of their wages before the official payday through salary advances. The practice is allowed when it is part of a company’s internal policy, a collective bargaining agreement, an individually negotiated contract clause, or a service offered by a financial institution. Companies that provide advances typically release about 40% of the gross salary around the 5th or 20th of the month, with the remainder paid by the 5th business day of the following month; the advance is then deducted from the subsequent payroll.

Globally, payroll processing must navigate diverse legal regimes, time‑zone differences, and banking cut‑offs. Luiz Bernabé, general manager for ADP in Latin America, notes that multinational firms often have to align payroll approvals across continents, sometimes sending files up to four days in advance to meet local deadlines. Such coordination ensures that employees in Brazil, the United States, Germany and other markets receive correct payments on schedule.
