Brazil economy shows mixed signals with transport growth and July contraction

Brazil is experiencing mixed economic signals across key sectors. The transport, storage, and mail sector saw a 1.1% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2026, reversing two consecutive quarters of decline. However, the sector faces high operational costs, including a 13.35% increase in diesel prices through August 2026.

In contrast, the broader Brazilian economy showed signs of deceleration. Data from the FGV GDP Monitor indicates a 0.4% contraction in July compared to June, marking the second consecutive month of decline. This slowdown is attributed to weakness in agriculture, industry, and services, alongside high interest rates and household debt.

Utility costs are also expected to rise, with Aneel projecting a 9.4% average increase in electricity bills for 2026, driven largely by financial components and sector charges. Additionally, the IGP-M inflation index saw a significant swing, with the September second preview rising 1.47% after a previous decline.
