Brazil electoral authorities set deadlines and tests for 2026 elections

As Brazil prepares for the 2026 General Elections, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and Regional Electoral Courts (TREs) are implementing several preparatory measures. A critical deadline of August 20 has been set for voters to request ‘voto em trânsito’ (transit voting), a service allowing citizens to vote in a different municipality if they are traveling during the first or second rounds on October 4 and October 25, respectively.

Transit voting is restricted to state capitals and municipalities with at least 100,000 eligible voters. Voters requesting transit voting within their home state can vote for all offices, including President, Governor, Senator, and deputies. However, those requesting to vote in a different state are limited to voting for the President only. Requests can be made online via the TSE website or in person at electoral offices.

In addition to voting logistics, the TSE has released training for poll workers via the ‘Mesário’ app, aiming to reach over 2 million individuals. Preparations also include simulated elections, such as one scheduled in Paulino Neves, Maranhão, to test electronic voting machine infrastructure, biometric identification speed, and system security. Current data shows over 20,000 candidacy registrations have been filed for various offices, including President, Governor, and legislative positions.
