Brazil 2026 voter demographic and logistics updates

Overview

In the lead-up to Brazil’s October 4, 2026, general elections, the electorate is characterized by an aging population and rising educational attainment. The total electorate has grown to approximately 158.8 million voters, a 17% increase from 2010, bolstered by a 31.8% surge in overseas voters. Demographic shifts show a significant decline in younger voters, with the 16 to 24 age group projected to decrease by 22% between 2010 and 2026. Conversely, the elderly population (60+) has increased by approximately 74% since 2010, totaling more than 36.8 million people.

Regarding electoral logistics, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has confirmed that the deadline to request ‘voto em trânsito’ (transit voting) is Thursday, August 20. This mechanism allows voters who will be away from their home municipality to temporarily transfer their voting location for the first round on October 4, the second round on October 25, or both. Transit voting is restricted to state capitals and municipalities with at least 100,000 voters. Voters staying within the same state can vote for all contested offices, while those in a different state may only vote for the presidency.

Requests can be made via the TSE ‘Autoatendimento Eleitoral’ portal for those with biometric registration—requiring facial validation through the e-Título app—or in person at electoral offices with a photo ID. Technical preparations continue as the TSE has released updated training for over 2 million poll workers via the ‘Mesário’ mobile application. In Maranhão, simulated elections are being conducted to test infrastructure, biometric identification speed, and the security of the electronic voting system. While registration for new titles and biometrics closed in May, free radio and TV advertising is scheduled to commence in late August. Additionally, current data indicates that over 20,000 candidacy registrations have been filed for various offices, including President, Governor, and legislative positions.
