TRE-RJ denies 15 candidacies due to criminal ties
The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) has denied the candidacy registrations of 15 individuals due to suspected links with criminal organizations, including militias and drug factions. The affected candidates include 11 for state deputy, 3 for federal deputy, and 1 substitute for senator.
Among the decisions, the court applied the 'milícia de gravata' (necktie militia) thesis to five cases. This legal interpretation targets organizations that infiltrate public administration and political structures to commit crimes, such as fraudulent bidding, without necessarily exercising territorial control through armed force. Notable denied candidates include Cristiane Brasil (DC) and Vaguinho Neguinho (PRD).
In addition to the candidacy denials, the TRE-RJ transferred 34 polling locations in areas influenced by criminal groups, such as the Comando Vermelho and Terceiro Comando Puro, affecting approximately 121,000 voters across 17 municipalities. TRE-RJ President Claudio de Mello Tavares stated the court is acting with rigor to protect democracy and prevent criminal groups from seizing state power through the electoral process.
