TRE-RJ denies 15 candidacies linked to organized crime
The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) has denied the candidacy registrations of 15 individuals due to suspected links with organized crime or paramilitary militias. The group of denied candidates includes 11 state deputy candidates, 3 federal deputy candidates, and 1 substitute senator candidate.
In five of these cases, the court applied the 'milícia de gravata' (necktie militia) thesis. This legal interpretation targets organizations that infiltrate public structures to commit crimes against the administration, such as fraudulent bidding processes, even without direct territorial control through armed force. Other denials were based on constitutional prohibitions against the use of paramilitary organizations in the electoral process.
Additionally, the TRE-RJ transferred 34 polling locations out of areas under the influence of criminal factions and militias, including regions controlled by Comando Vermelho, Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP), and Amigos dos Amigos (ADA). These changes affect approximately 121,000 voters across the capital and 16 other municipalities.
TRE-RJ President Claudio de Mello Tavares stated the court is acting with rigor to protect democracy and prevent criminal organizations from seizing state power through the electoral system.
