Brazil electoral courts deploy new digital tools and security measures

Brazilian regional electoral courts are introducing new technologies and security measures ahead of upcoming elections. In Piauí, the TRE-PI has launched ‘Kiwi’, a WhatsApp-based tool that allows voters to check queue lengths at their polling stations. The court also introduced the ‘Cristal Jurisprudência’ tool and the ‘Eleições+’ application to improve voter engagement and combat disinformation.

In Minas Gerais, the TRE-MG has affirmed the security of the electronic voting system, stating there is ‘zero possibility of fraud’. The court is focusing on monitoring electoral propaganda, particularly regarding the use of artificial intelligence, which must be clearly identified. Specialized commissions have been established to oversee internet content and campaign advertisements, responding to reports from the Public Electoral Ministry, political parties, and citizens via the ‘Pardal’ app or official ombudsmen.
